Iolite

The mesmerizing gemstone, Iolite also called Cordierite, Water Sapphire, Dichroite or Neeli, is a silicate of magnesium, iron and aluminum. This violet-blue gem is known for its pleochroism, whereby it displays different colors when viewed from three different angles (trichroic)- blue, grayish-yellow, and colorless. It is often confused with tanzanite and blue sapphire and is often used as alternative to these gemstones on account of its affordability. Although it has hardness of 7-7.5 on Mohs scale, it is prone to breakage due to cleavage in one direction. Major sources of iolite are Australia, Brazil, India, Madagascar, and Sri Lanka. Being a Type II clarity stone, Iolite typically contains visible inclusions such as liquid feathers, hexagonal platelets of minerals hematite (bloodshot) and biotite or fluid-filled tubes. The much sought-after phenomenon of aventurescence or a glittery, shimmering effect in iolite is due to metallic plate inclusions of hematite. Biotite or black mica appears as deep dark plate like inclusions. Some stones may display chatoyancy- band of light across the surface of the gem, caused by parallel inclusions of rutile. Goethite inclusions of iron oxide are needle-like and form patterns or clusters within the stone resulting in pleochroism. Fluid inclusions can create a bubble effect and add uniqueness to the gemstone. Although inclusions are seen as flaws in other gemstones, they make iolite gemstone truly captivating. As a “Stone of Vision,” it is believed to offer physical and mental strength. It enhances intuition, promotes creativity, brings professional success, and aids in detoxification and sleep.
