Shungite is a rare, carbon-rich mineraloid known for its deep black look, grounding energy, and use in modern holistic decor. It is pyrobitumen or a diverse group of metamorphosed Precambrian rocks containing pyrobitumen. First recorded in Shunga village in Karelia, Russia, major deposits of this rock are reported from Russia. Other occurrences have been described from Austria, India, Democratic Republic of Congo and Kazakhstan. It is widely used for meditation, crystal collections, and EMF protection (such as placing pieces near Wi-Fi routers or phones). Elite (Noble) Shungite (Type I) contains 90–98% carbon, looks glossy and silver-metallic, and is very fragile. Regular Shungite (Type II) contains 30–50% carbon, has a matte black look, and is easily shaped into pyramids, tiles, or jewelry. Shungite contains trace amounts of carbon allotropes such as graphene sheets and fullerenes (carbon nanoparticles). The hardness of Shungite Ranks between 3.5 and 4 for regular-to-common grades, and up to 4.5 for elite types. It has a high electrical conductivity ranging from 1×10³ to 4.76×10³ Sim/m (S/m) due to a unique fullerenic carbon matrix. Although Shungite is well known for use in water purification, studies show raw shungite can leach heavy metals like nickel, lead and cadmium, leading to health concerns. Shungite has been used since the middle of the 18th century as a pigment for paint, and is currently sold under the names “carbon black” or “shungite natural black”. In metaphysical domain, Shungite is used in meditation or kept nearby to help calm the mind and ease anxiety.
