Opal is a hydrated amorphous form of silica classified as a mineraloid and found with limonite, sandstone, rhyolite, marl, and basalt. The name opal is believed to be derived from the Sanskrit word upala (उपल), which means ‘jewel’. Precious opal displays characteristic play-of-color or iridescence under white light caused due to diffraction of light from internal silica spheres (150–300 nm diameter) . Opal stone is transparent, translucent, or opaque, and the background color may be white, black, or nearly any color. Black opal is considered the rarest, while white, gray, and green opals are the most common. Opal is believed to promote love, enhance creativity, and bring good luck and prosperity. It is also associated with improved emotional well-being, financial success, and physical health, particularly in relation to the nervous and immune systems.
