Ruby, a variety of corundum (aluminium oxide) is a pinkish-red to blood-red precious gemstone. It is durable and a very popular gemstone for jewelry. With a hardness of 9 on Mohs scale, ruby is a durable gemstone. Presence of chromium results in the red color of ruby, while absorption in UV range results in fluorescence. Although clear gems are valued, gems without needle-like rutile (silk) inclusions may indicate treated stones. Although pinker than garnet, ruby may have similar hue as rhodolite garnet. Structurally oriented rutile needles result in asterism in the star rubies. Some rubies display chatoyancy (cat’s eye effect) while some display color change property. Ruby improves vitality, confidence, and emotional healing. The gemstone is also associated with protection, attracting wealth, and enhancing creativity. Since it is linked to the Sun, it is believed to strengthen its influence in a person’s life leading to success.
