The cross-sectional view of single polyp tube of fossil coral jasper reveals intricate pattern formed by compartmentation. The inner walls of the tubular polyps are formed from calcium carbonate. The process of fossilization transforms them into crytocrystalline silica resulting in formation of jasper stone.
