While quartz can contain green tourmaline (verdelite) needles, "tourmalinated quartz" most often refers to quartz with thick, black schorl tourmaline needles. It is also called Hajar al-Sha'r al-Akhdar (Green Hair Stone) in Islamic gemology. Because of its green inclusions, this stone is strongly tied to the energy of spring.
